The most prestigious award in music, The Grammy, has released this year's nominations today. The Grammy is ranked slightly higher than the American Music Award possibly because of the specification of location. Why The Grammy is better than the AMA is practically irrelevant, what I'm here to discuss is the most sought-after Grammy, the Best New Artist. Past winners include Hootie & the Blowfish, Paula Cole, Men at Work, The Beatles and Bob Newhart. To win a Best New Artist Grammy puts you on the same level as The Beatles or Bob Newhart, and what artist wouldn't want that?
Zac Brown Band
I have never heard of the Zac Brown Band. I haven't listened to the radio in half a decade, and I have a feeling if I did I still would have no idea who Zac Brown Band is. The number one song most listened to on last.fm is called "Toes" and number two is "Chicken Fried." I know Bob Newhart and this band is no Bob Newhart.
Keri Hilson
I am not too familiar with Keri Hilson, but I know who she is, at least. I have heard her song about getting turned on she does with Lil' Wayne and she has a feature on the new R. Kelly. I don't know her chances of winning, but they're probably pretty good. She's probably the best selling artist on this list, which is usually how they decide who wins.
MGMT
I don't really understand how a band that released an album in 2007 can be nominated for a Grammy for this year. You'd figure that the group who gives awards to music would be ahead of everybody else instead of behind. At least MGMT is a good band. They have no chance of winning. Although I have no idea how popular they are in the "real" world.
Silversun Pickups
Never heard of them, but last.fm says I have listened to one song by them. After listening to a clip, they sound like something I would have listened to in high school.
The Ting Tings
Out of all the nominations this is my favorite. I really like their album a lot. It came out in 2008, so at the very least it's got that over MGMT. This band is the Bob Newhart or Paula Cole of 2010.
WTF??? silversun pickups came out in 2005! i've never listened to them but used to see their music video all the time. i don't know who zac brown band or keri kilson are. i googled zac brown band and they have a song called "chicken fried." i like mgmt and ting tings, but mgmt suck live and ting tings are gr8. i'm casting my vote for hootie and the blowfish though.
ReplyDeleteAre you sure that MGMT album wasn't released in 2008?
ReplyDeleteKeri Hilson sang that song 'Jesus Takes the Wheel'
ReplyDeleteI'm pulling for Lady Gaga in everything she's nominated for. She's the only chart topping, album selling diva who might actually get an award but is still an underdog.
ReplyDeleteLook for Taylor Swift to win everything Beyonce isn't nominated for. gag.
Lady Gaga sang that song 'Jesus Wheel'
ReplyDeletemgmt's album was definitely released in 2007. lady gaga is an underdog????? i thought she was really popular. is robert pattinson nominated for anything?
ReplyDeleteMGMT was released in 2008. Wikipedia and Allmusic can't both be wrong, right?
ReplyDeleteI've literally never heard any music from these 5 artists.
ReplyDeleteWikipedia wrote that 'Jesus's Wheels' song
ReplyDeleteMGMT is Iris' favorite band, just ahead of The Wiggles
ReplyDeleteWHAT IS MGMT???? Every time I read it I think of MGM or TMNT.
ReplyDeleteIris would never listen to a band from 2007!
ReplyDeletemgmt's ep came out in 2005, and their album was released digitally in 2007 and on cd in early 2008. HOW DOES THAT MEAN BEST NEW ARTIST FOR 2009? or is this best new artist for 2008? GLENN, YOU KNOW WHO MGMT ARE!!!!! btw - i watched the video for "chicken fried" by the zac band. according to mikerizzle12, it is an "amazing song!!!! nothing like AMERICA! chicken fried, beer, women, freedom!!!! HOOAH!." ncfave says, "there's no way any one could get this song without living it."
ReplyDeleteMGMT sang that song 'Wheeled Jesus Party'
ReplyDeleteI take back calling MGMT a good band after hearing their newest album.
ReplyDeleteI have now heard MGMT and "liked" their first album. I have not heard Congratulations.
